http://www.cuil.com/

I got a mail from a techie senior about this new search engine, that boasts to be better den google.. So I decided to put it to test, but before that a **** thwack.... ***** to anyone who makes such a big claim.. :)

Cuil has been started by former Googlers (Google Employee) but does this mean, they know the details of the efficient algorithms.. Even Sergery would find it difficult to make sucha complex algo again..

Test 1

I searched for my name (without quotes) in Cuil..
3 results..

1 from the SE developer forum where I was active during college days working on Mobile phones..
1 completely irrelevant
1 about a video I uploaded to youtube, which was amazingly filed in a website of romantic videos.. (My video was not at all Romantic)

The same search in google...

Just taking into consideration the first page, first 9 out of the 10 results are relevant.. i.e. Related to me..

Quite a difference, right.. :)

With Quotes

Cuil gives me the same results.. Argh.. Do quotes matter or dont they...

Again google gives me 10 relevant results on the first page itself.. I dont plan to scan more..

Test 2

I was a fan of Ishmeet's singing, and deeply moved about the news of his sudden death.. When I first came to know about that, I search the, then opened search page on my screen.. i.e. Cuil..

4 results on this page are not at all related to him.. and not a single one related to the current incident..

The same search in google..

Obviously we cannot expect Cuil to give as updated results as Google, but relevancy is something not to be compromised at all..

Test 3

I give search for himesh reshammiya with the name himmesh reshamiyan, such a small change was enough to confuse Cuil to give only 5 results

Spell correction is obv a "feature" from Google, but if a search engine is claiming to be better than google, this is a basic feature and its no sin to implicitly assume this to be a feature with Cuil.

Test 4

Features..

I use calculator, weather etc etc 100 times a day from Google. As a search engine claiming to be better, I expected this too.. but alas!

Test 5 - GUI

Cuil sucks, they have tried a Google like plain simple interface, but I dint find it inviting, atleast not in the first try.
Search engine is something, I search, find result, click and off I go... Cuil forced me to pain fully adapt my eyes to weird rows and columnar structure, weird arrangement of text blocks.

Is it a way to a avoid the compulsion of ordering results according to relevancy.. Think about it..

Last but not the least, the final verdict.. 1 Star

Reason:
Atleast it searches something..
It doesnt give results from meta-search engines like google does... Or maybe they forgot to index the meta-search engines... :D

And last but not the least, Cuil doesn't give me this blog.. Sheee...

The Cuil launch was to be done a couple of days back. I searched for the same term 'Cuil launch' yest. One hardly gets any results.

I guess they are being modest!!!
